Mother's Day 2022

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and this year we’re all looking forward to being able to meet up in person and celebrate together, but where does Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday originate?

It is thought that Mothering Sunday started in the Middle Ages. As people moved further away from the villages where they grew up, they would go back to visit their home, or ‘mother churches’ and their own mothers, once a year, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This later became ‘Mothering Sunday’ or Mother’s Day, as it is now more commonly known.

The date of Mother’s Day alters each year due to the varying dates of Lent, which are determined by the date of Easter. Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.

Choosing a Mother’s Day gift for the special woman in your life is as important as ever, whether it be for Mum, Grandma, Sister or Aunty.

Traditional Mother’s Day gifts might have included a posy of flowers or a simnel cake, which, although now associated with Easter, was originally a cake made for Mothering Sunday. This rich fruit cake with a layer of marzipan was baked to celebrate the family reunion during the austerity of Lent.

Today gift giving has grown to include unique and personal items, individual to the recipient. Jewellery is a great fail-safe option for Mother’s Day and we like to think that any Mum would be happy to receive a LOVELOX locket this Sunday! To make her locket extra special add a name or personal message engraved on the reverse and photos of a special memory inside, to capture the moment forever.
